There will not be any 5-7 teams reaching a bowl this season. And having too many bowl eligible teams also makes for nervous waiting for some 6-6 teams in the lower level conferences. At the moment we are projecting Wyoming, Miami (OH) and Louisiana-Monroe to miss out. But of course the individual bowls may have drastically different ideas. There will be a ton of teams fighting for their sixth win and bowl eligibility as the regular season wraps up this Saturday. The AAC has two teams sitting at 5-6 in SMU and Tulane. The ACC has Florida State and Wake Forest. The Big 12 has an impressive four teams at 5-6. Baylor and Texas Tech will face off so one of them will reach six wins. The others are TCU and Kansas State. Clemson has won the ACC Atlantic Division, but who they will face in the ACC title game remains up for grabs. However, Pittsburgh took a huge step towards winning the Coastal Division following their 52-22 victory over Virginia Tech. That puts the Panthers at 5-1 in ACC play with only Virginia, at 4-2, providing a serious threat. If there was ever any doubt, Alabama is clearly the best team in the country after their dominating 29-0 win over LSU. It seems very likely that the Crimson Tide will once again meet Clemson in the finals of the playoffs. There will be some teams like Notre Dame and Michigan who will not just be happy to get to the playoffs, if they do, but right now Alabama and Clemson is the matchup that nearly everyone will want to see…again.

There is still a long ways to go and only one Pac-12 team has fewer than two losses. Washington State sits at 4-1 after a thrilling 41-38 come from behind victory at Stanford. The Cougars are now firmly in control of the Pac-12 North. They got some help from California, who beat Washington 12-10. The Apple Cup showdown on November 23rd will likely decide the North. The big news in week eight was Purdue’s upset victory over Ohio State. The Buckeyes struggled in the red zone and allowed Purdue to drop 49 points on them. With Michigan’s defensive dominance over rival Michigan State, the Wolverines are now projected to reach the Playoffs. Four teams ranked in the top ten lost on Saturday and a few others were involved in very close calls. Georgia’s loss to LSU shakes up the playoff projections. The Bulldogs are still right in the mix for an SEC East title, but they will need to rebound quickly with Florida, Kentucky and Auburn next up on the schedule. Texas made a big push towards the Big 12 title with their thrilling victory over Oklahoma. Once again the Red River Rivalry was a close content, but this time Texas held on for a 48-45 victory. That leaves the Longhorns and West Virginia as the lone undefeated teams in Big 12 play. Two top ten showdowns dominated the slate this week. Notre Dame hosted Stanford and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 38-17 victory. The Cardinal are still a serious contender in the Pac-12, but that win was big for the Irish. With wins over Michigan and now Stanford, Notre Dame has some quality wins on their resume. There were quite a few close calls on Saturday, but it was Virginia Tech who took the biggest tumble. Last week we had the Hokies representing the ACC in the Peach Bowl.
