The big question now is who is the fourth team in the playoffs…a one loss Alabama or a two-loss Ohio State? Of course the Buckeyes have the benefit of an extra game and a conference title, but taking the entire body of work into account, as the committee should, the Crimson Tide have the better resume. As usual, the playoff picture got more muddled on the last week of the regular season. The winner of the SEC title game between Georgia and Auburn are likely in. So is the winner of the Clemson and Miami matchup. Oklahoma and Wisconsin control their own destiny. Win and they are in and that would complete the four. Conference USA has eight of their 14 teams bowl eligibility. Either Middle Tennessee or Old Dominion will become number nine when those two face off on Saturday. Louisiana Tech could make it ten if they can beat Texas-San Antonio at home this weekend. That is impressive. The SEC will end up with nine, so Conference USA could surpass them in that regard. Miami made a huge statement with their blowout victory over Notre Dame. The Hurricanes are now 9-0 and have back-to-back wins over ranked teams. This week they host Virginia before finishing the regular season at Pitt. The ACC Championship game against Clemson will be the big game for their playoff hopes though. Oklahoma picked up a thrilling 62-52 victory over rival Oklahoma State on Saturday. That puts the Sooners right back in the mix for a playoff spot. However, that could be short lived with TCU coming to town this week. The Horned Frogs are also sitting at 5-1 in Big 12 play and 8-1 overall. The winner of that game is likely the Big 12’s only remaining playoff hopes.

The Penn State at Ohio State game lived up to the hype. The Buckeyes mounted an impressive comeback to beat the Nittany Lions 39-38. That leaves both teams at 7-1, but gives OSU the huge advantage of being 5-0 in Big Ten play. There is a long way to go, including road trips to Iowa and Michigan, but the Buckeyes are now clearly the favorites to reach the conference championship game from the tough Big Ten East.

The projected participants in the playoffs (Alabama, Penn State, Georgia and TCU) went unchanged this week. It was the Nittany Lions though that made the biggest statement with a 42-13 victory over Michigan in Happy Valley. From top to bottom, the bowls went wild in week seven. The big winners are TCU and Georgia, who replace Clemson and Washington in the playoffs. With the loss by Oklahoma, the playoff picture has moved significantly this week. Of course the Sooners are out and that leaves the Big Ten and the Pac-12 as the potential big winners.
