By our count there are 79 bowl eligible teams. With 39 bowl games, one team will be left out. The easy answer here would be to leave out a 7-5 Liberty team with two wins over FCS programs and no conference affiliation. However, the Flames did get a secondary bowl agreement with the Cure Bowl to fill that spot should the AAC or Sun Belt not be able to fill all their bowl spots. The bowl picture is becoming clearer, but there are quite a few teams that need to pick up their sixth win in the final week of the regular season. Most figured teams like Michigan State, TCU, North Carolina would be bowling this season, but they all must win this week to reach the minimum bowl requirement. The bowl picture in the Pac-12 is an absolute mess. Utah, Oregon, Washington and USC are bowl eligible with two weeks left to go. The other eight teams are, amazingly, either 4-6 or 5-5. That puts them all in a position to play their way into a bowl game. That cannot happen of course since they are playing each other in many cases, but will get six or seven teams into a bowl game. LSU picked up a huge win at Alabama on Saturday afternoon, holding off the Crimson Tide by a score of 46-41. The Tigers have a very manageable schedule the rest of the way until they head to the SEC title game. But it was the other matchup between unbeaten teams that led to a bit of a surprise. Most of the top teams were off Saturday, but there are some huge games coming up this week. LSU and Alabama meet up in Tuscaloosa and that game will likely decide the top team in the country. The loser could be in good shape for a spot in the playoffs though. They would almost certainly miss out on the SEC championship game, but would be a one-loss team in a very good SEC. The big story this week was Oklahoma’s shocking loss to Kansas State. That seriously hurts Oklahoma’s chances to reach the playoffs, even if they manage to win out from here. For now that leaves Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and Clemson in the playoffs. Of course those two SEC teams face off on November 9th and that could change the playoff picture. Alabama moved to 7-0, but lost quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for at least a couple weeks with a high ankle sprain. The good news for the Crimson Tide is that after hosting Arkansas, they have a bye week before hosting LSU on November 9th. That could be the game of the year and decide the winner of the SEC West. There were some huge upsets across the college football landscape on Saturday, but none were bigger than South Carolina shocking Georgia between the hedges. That knocks Georgia out of the playoffs for now and could leave a lot of questions for the selection committee. Right now we project LSU to finish with one regular season loss, at Alabama, and finish the regular season 11-1. The SEC gave us a taste of things to come this week when Florida hosted Auburn in a matchup of top ten teams. The Gators came out on top thanks to the toughness of quarterback Kyle Trask and the elusiveness of running back Lamical Perine. That puts Florida in the mix for a spot in the playoffs. North Carolina nearly shook up the playoff picture, but Clemson managed to beat the Tar Heels 21-20. The Tigers may appear vulnerable now, but there are bound to be some close calls along the way. That left very few upsets in the top 25 this week. Arizona State went to #14 Cal and came away with a surprising win and Oklahoma State knocked off a Kansas State squad that was ranked in some polls.
