Bowl games are starting to fall. This week the Pinstripe Bowl announced that the game would not be played in 2020. That knocks out one ACC team and one Big Ten team…on paper at least. With many conferences not playing non-conference schedules, the power conferences are having a tougher time than usual reaching a .500 record. This weird 2020 season does give teams outside of the Power Five conferences a shot at the reaching playoffs. Teams like Cincinnati and BYU will have to run the table, but that could be enough for them to end up in the top four. The Bearcats picked up a nice win at UCF this week and have a decent resume. The Big Ten has been full of surprises this season. Penn State and Michigan are a combined 1-7. Last week we took the Nittany Lions out of the bowl projections. This week we take the Wolverines out after they looked absolutely terrible at home against Wisconsin on Saturday night. The top of the conference is no less surprising. The bowl schedule is confirmed and there will be 36 bowl games, not counting the national championship game. That leaves 72 teams to fill those spots. Of course, that could change and we will keep up with those changes on a weekly basis. But for this week, Clemson and Notre Dame gave us a double overtime thriller on Saturday night. With spring sports cancelled, College Sports Madness will take an earlier look than usual at the upcoming 2020 football season. Instead of the usual Top 44 previews leading up to opening day of the football campaign, we will start our previews in April and still countdown one per day from #44 to #1. Final Football Bowl Projection Breakdown

The fourth spot in the playoffs turned out to be very interesting. Utah would have likely been in had they won on Friday night. Georgia would have gotten in had they beat LSU in the SEC title game, but that did not happen. Oklahoma and Baylor went to overtime in what was likely a play-in game into the playoffs. The Sooners came out on top and should have played their way into the last spot, joining Ohio State, LSU and Clemson in the playoffs.

By our count there are 79 bowl eligible teams. With 39 bowl games, one team will be left out. The easy answer here would be to leave out a 7-5 Liberty team with two wins over FCS programs and no conference affiliation. However, the Flames did get a secondary bowl agreement with the Cure Bowl to fill that spot should the AAC or Sun Belt not be able to fill all their bowl spots. The bowl picture is becoming clearer, but there are quite a few teams that need to pick up their sixth win in the final week of the regular season. Most figured teams like Michigan State, TCU, North Carolina would be bowling this season, but they all must win this week to reach the minimum bowl requirement. The bowl picture in the Pac-12 is an absolute mess. Utah, Oregon, Washington and USC are bowl eligible with two weeks left to go. The other eight teams are, amazingly, either 4-6 or 5-5. That puts them all in a position to play their way into a bowl game. That cannot happen of course since they are playing each other in many cases, but will get six or seven teams into a bowl game.
