Just when we were all but giving up on the American Athletic Conference making things interesting for Louisville, the conference had a strong week. The Cardinals, of course, won 72-0 over Florida International, but Houston and Rutgers had more impressive victories. The Cougars remained undefeated after going to Rice and holding on for a 31-26 win. The top teams were finally tested today, albeit some more than others. Alabama spotted Texas A&M 14 points before reeling off 35 unanswered. But the Aggies made a superb comeback effort and seriously tested the Tide defense. Alabama answered the call, but allowing 42 points to anybody could be a problem. Once again the ACC got a huge win over the SEC. In week one Clemson knocked off Georgia and on Saturday Miami shut down the Florida offense. The Hurricanes held off the Gators 21-16. Enjoy it while you can ACC fans. But watch out for the Hurricanes. To many they were already the favorites to win the ACC Coastal Division, but now there should be hope that they can win the championship game over Clemson or Florida State. Of course we still have a long, long way to go. Miami has a week off and then hosts Savannah State, so it will be a while ...

The big story of the first weekend of college football was the upsets by FCS schools over what was supposed to be some decent FBS squads. There should be a few more coming up over the next couple of weeks. But we will look at the top of the pecking order. Alabama and Ohio State cruised to relatively easy victories over Virginia Tech and Buffalo, respectively, to stay #1 and #2 in the rankings. However, there were chinks in the armor.
