Cal Poly at Sam Houston State FCS Playoffs 2nd Round Breakdown
Sam Houston State vs. Cal Poly
There are quite a few very interesting second round games in the playoffs this year, but the matchup between Sam Houston State and Cal Poly could be the most exciting. The Bearkats and the Mustangs have two of the most potent offenses in the nation. Sam Houston State has scored 50 or more points in six of their 11 games. In their other two wins they scored over 40 points. In their three losses SHSU averaged just 23.7 points, but a couple of those contests were against Baylor and Texas A&M. Running back Timothy Flanders is one of the best in the game, averaging over 100 yards per contest. Quarterback Brian Bell is pretty good with his feet too and that is one reason why the Bearkats allowed a measly four sacks during the regular season. Bell is an efficient and smart passer as well and he helps the team avoid turnovers. Cal Poly may have a tough time stopping Flanders and although the rush defense is pretty strong, the Mustangs can certainly outscore the Bearkats. On paper, Poly is a lot like SHSU. They have a great workhorse running back in Deonte Williams and an efficient quarterback in Andre Broadous. The Mustangs are a bit different since they will spend more time on the ground and ask Broadous to do more damage with his legs than his arm. Cal Poly may have a tougher time coming from behind than Sam Houston State would, but they also have a deeper defense from top to bottom and Poly may not need to come from behind in this game.
