Despite all of the drama at the top of the bowls, the bottom is quite interesting too. There are more bowls than bowl eligible teams and, by our count, we should head to the APR for one team with a 5-7 record. Nearly all of the top teams survived scares this week. It was Tennessee that did not survive, falling to South Carolina. That is very good news for USC, who beat UCLA in a 48-45 thriller. The Trojans now basically control their own playoff destiny. If they can beat Notre Dame next week and win the Pac-12 Championship game after that, they will be in the playoffs. TCU survived a tough road test at Texas, winning 17-10. That clinches their spot in the Big 12 title game and keeps their hopes alive for a berth in the playoffs. They have another road game next at Baylor, but this is a Bears team that just lost at home 31-3 against Kansas State. Following their somewhat surprising win over Boston College, Connecticut is now 4-5 and poised to reach a bowl game for the first time since 2015. The Huskies should get to five wins when they play UMass on Friday night. After that they host Liberty and travel to Army. It’s the game against Army which will likely decide their bowl fate. Week 8 did not shake up the top teams in the bowl projections like last week did. The big winner of the week may end up being Oregon, who picked up a nice 45-30 victory over UCLA. The top spots in the bowl projections finally saw some major changes following an exciting week 7. The biggest of them all came in Knoxville where Tennessee beat Alabama. That moves the Volunteers into the projected playoffs in Alabama’s old spot. The spots in the Big 12 and ACC New Year’s Six Bowls also changed hands. Alabama had a close call against Texas A&M, but stayed perfect with a 24-20 victory. Tennessee and UCLA both got wins over ranked teams. The Volunteers crushed LSU on the road, but they play Alabama next and travel to Georgia next month. If they are going to reach the playoffs, or even a New Year's Six Bowl, they will certainly earn it. The Bruins beat Utah 42-32 and have a week off before heading to Oregon.

Week 5 provided some close calls for the top teams in the nation. Most notable was Georgia’s comeback victory over Missouri. The Bulldogs were down 22-12 early in the fourth quarter, but scored 14 unanswered to remain undefeated. We currently have Georgia projected to face off against Ohio State in the semifinals of the playoffs, with projected top-seeded Alabama going up against Clemson in the other semifinals. Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Cincinnati will be in the playoffs. The only question that remains is the seeding order, but that really will not matter anyway. Alabama or Michigan could be #1, but the Wolverines will have to play Georgia since the committee will not pit two SEC teams against each other.
