It’s just the opening weekend of Division I college softball, but it’s the only on-the-field evidence of who’s got what this season.
The Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, was among the best places to make that evaluation as 28 teams, including 12 from College Sports Madness’ Top 44, were in action for four days. The 75 games (plus one cancellation) gave us a good starting sample.
It’s been said that losing is the best teacher in sports. More is learned from defeat than victory, where everyone mostly just enjoys the spoils.

The 28-team showcase has 12 teams ranked in the College Sports Madness Top 44, but it also has some teams that are looking for a turnaround in 2018. There was much to be learned about how this season will unfold for teams of both types.
A couple of coaches from opposing schools, scouting the Georgia-San Diego State game that started the 28-team Kajikawa Classic, laughed at one’s comment that they were anxious to get on the field and see what they had.
“Everyone is like that for the opening game,” one replied, as all agreed. “At least until Saturday.”
