Stillwater Region 2014 Baseball World Series Breakdown

Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Cal State Fullerton, Binghamton

Oklahoma State caps off an impressive regular season by hosting a regional. The Cowboys won the Big 12 regular season title and then fell to TCU in the Big 12 Tournament final. Oklahoma State loves the long ball, as they average 0.78 per game, which is good for 13th in the country. The Big 12 Player of the Year, Zach Fish, leads the way with a .320 average, 11 home runs and 44 RBI’s, while Tanner Krietemeier has added 9 home runs and 43 RBI’s. The Cowboys also have two big time arms on the mound in Jon Perrin, 7-4 with a 1.78 ERA, and Vince Wheeland, 9-0 with a 1.49 ERA, and a dominant closer in Brendan McCurry, who has 18 saves and a 0.42 ERA on the season.

Nebraska is a formidable opponent as a two seed. The Cornhuskers are great offensively, posting a team batting average of .296, and defensively, with a team fielding percentage of .977. Michael Pritchard and Pat Kelly form a dominant duo in the lineup, as they are hitting .311 with 46 RBI’s and .312 with 55 RBI’s, respectively. On the mound, Chance Sinclair has emerged as a big time arm, going 9-2 with a 2.29 ERA this season. As a three seed, Cal State Fullerton is a team that nobody wants to be playing right now. The Titans are red hot, winners of their last seven. J.D. Davis, .338 batting average, 5 home runs and 38 RBI’s, and Matt Chapman, .321 average, 6 home runs and 46 RBI’s, lead the Titans offensively. Fullerton also has four big time arms on the mound in Thomas Eshelmann, Justin Garza, Grahamm Weist and Phil Bickford that can match up with any team in the country. Binghamton is the fourth team in this powerhouse of a regional and they will have their hands full. The Bearcats won the America East Conference Tournament after finishing third in the conference this season to secure their place in the field and they will look to ride that momentum. This is one of the tougher regions out there and don’t be surprised if either Nebraska or Cal State Fullerton wins it.
