Lafayette Region 2014 Softball World Series Breakdown

#6 Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi State, Texas Southern

If all plays out as planned, we are in for a treat when #6 Louisiana plays #11 Arizona in the super regionals. Louisiana ranks second to only Arizona in home runs per game. But before we can look forward that far, the Ragin’ Cajuns have to get past Texas, Mississippi State and Texas Southern. And that will not be an easy task. Louisiana can outscore anybody thanks to Lexie Elkins and company, but they will need good showings from Christina Hamilton and Jordan Wallace in the circle.

The Texas offense lacks the firepower that Louisiana possesses, but they can still score in bunches. Taylor Thom and Lindsey Stephens have plenty of pop in their bat and combined for 104 RBI’s on the year, but the true strength of the Longhorns offense is Brejae Washington, Gabby Smith and Stephanie Ceo getting on base and letting the heart of the order do their thing. If freshman pitcher Tiarra Davis can join veteran Gabby Smith as solid options in the circle, the Longhorns can make it back to Oklahoma City. Mississippi State does not have the depth throughout the lineup that Louisiana and Texas has, but the Lady Bulldogs have picked up plenty of quality wins throughout their play in the SEC and are more than capable of pulling off a few wins in Lafayette. Texas Southern rounds out the group. The Tigers are a good scoring team, but their pitching is going to be outmatched against the other great offenses in this region.
