2014 Men’s Basketball Coaching Carousel (Part III)
The Division I men’s college basketball head coaching changes have hit 44, surpassing last year’s 42. To go with the 44 DI head coaches there have been 39 DII, 33 DIII, and 15 NAIA head coaching changes. In total, between head and assistant job changes the meter is at 377 and running.
As the carousel slows down, it is time to look and the best and worst hires. Mark Taggatz of Advantage Link Sports Management expects Danny Manning to step in and improve Wake Forest’s record right away. Taggatz stated “Danny Manning was great as a player in college and the pros and I expect the trend to continue for him as a Head Coach as evidenced by his 13-3 conference record this year at Tulsa.” Taggatz also likes Marquette’s hiring decision. Taggatz continued “I also see great value in the selection of Steve Wojociechowski as the new head coach at Marquette. Wojociechowski has been at Duke since his playing days there and finally his skills as a head coach will be utilized after serving under Mike Krzyzewski, arguably the best basketball coach since John Wooden. Look for the Marquette D to stop the corner 3’s on Defense.”
Only time will tell the real winners and losers of this hiring season but it will be a lot of fun speculating alongside the experts until the carousel stops spinning and the teams start playing.
