2014 Men's Basketball Coaching Carousel (Part II)
Thus far there has been 37 Division 1 men’s college basketball head coaching changes. This is five short of last year’s 42, but there are still coaches that are on the hot seat and may not see next season’s tip off. While many think the carousel is limited to DI head coaches the reality is the carousel drags in all men’s head and assistant from DI,II,III and even NAIA into the fold. In many cases, so many termination and resignations happen the media can’t report them all and it isn’t until a classified advertisement surfaces than anyone even know a coach is gone. Thus far there have been 188 coaching changes and the meter is still running.
For the top DI jobs we are hearing some candidates that will keep the carousel moving through April. Reggie Theus (Cal State Northridge) and Stephen Thompson (Cal State LA) are the two leading candidates for the open Cal Berkeley position. Murray Bartow (East Tennessee State) has surpassed Mike D’Antoni as the leading candidate for the Marshall job and Ricardo Patton (formerly of Northern Illinois) is the leading candidate for Tennessee State.
