Baseball Games of the Week (4/19 - 4/21)

 

#7 Florida State at #9 Virginia (4/19 6 pm ET, 4/20 4 pm ET, 4/21 1 pm ET)

Virginia is coming off of a series loss to Georgia Tech and a week which saw the drop three of the four games it played.  Florida State has won seven of its last nine games, including a sweep of Duke last weekend.

Virginia: Brandon Downes is the team's power hitter with five home runs and 36 RBI, but three other Cavs, including Derek Fisher, have four home runs each. Fisher is also tied for second on the team with 30 RBI. Downes also has a team-high 11 doubles and team-leading four triples.

With a 6-0 record, Scott Silverstein is still undefeated through his nine starts. Kyle Crockett has saved seven of the 17 games he's appeared in and won two. Despite only figuring in a decision in three of his nine starts, Brandon Waddell has a team-high 55 strikeouts.

Florida State: Jose Brizuela has a team-high 46 hits, but Marcus Davis is the team's slugger, knocking seven balls out of the yard. The Seminoles have produced 88 doubles with four players with at least 11 each.

Scott Sitz is the squad's top pitcher with a 7-0 record in nine starts and a 1.04 ERA. He has only given up six earned runs in his 52 innings pitched. Luke Weaver, who has a 4-0 record and 1.40 ERA in nine games, including seven starts, leads the team with a staff-high 51 strikeouts. Robby Coles leads the team with eight saves.

 

#5 Cal State Fullerton at Cal Poly (4/19 6 pm PDT, 4/20 6 pm PDT, 4/21 1 pm PDT)

Cal State-Fullerton comes in having won 11 of its last 12 games, including wins over USC and UCLA.  Cal Poly has won five of its last six and brings a 15-4 home record into the weekend

Cal State Fullerton: Michael Lorenzen is the team's leader in hits (48), doubles (seven), triples (three), home runs (seven) and RBI (36). J.D. Davis has 33 RBI, second on the team.

The team's three weekend starters are two freshmen and a sophomore. One freshman, Justin Garza, is 7-0 in nine starts, while his classmate, Thomas Eshelman, has a 7-1 record and 1.09 ERA.

Cal Poly: Denver Chavez has a team high in runs (33), hits (56), doubles (11), stolen bases (11) and a team-low of nine strikeouts. Nick Torres has six home runs and 30 RBI, while Brian Mundell has knocked out seven long balls.

Joey Wagman is the team's stud pitcher, compiling  a 7-2 record in nine starts and striking out an impressive 72 opponents.
