Stony Brook at Montana State FCS Playoffs 2nd Round Breakdown

Stony Brook at Montana State FCS Playoffs 2nd Round Breakdown

#3 Montana State vs. Stony Brook

Montana State is a tough team to beat, especially at home. The Bobcats wrapped up the regular season with an 11-1 record, losing only to Eastern Washington. This is a team that has a very balanced offense thanks to quarterback Denarius McGhee and running backs Cody Kirk and Orenzo Davis. Few teams have had much luck containing Montana State’s offense and do not be surprised if they lay down 40 or more points in the playoffs. But Stony Brook has the offensive firepower to try to hang around and come close to pulling off an upset. Coming off of a 20-10 win against Villanova in the first round, the Seawolves will need to play good defense again too. For a team that allows around 16 points per game, it is certainly feasible that Stony Brook’s defense can keep the Bobcats under control. However, McGhee should get plenty of time in the pocket and he can pick just about any secondary apart. If that happens to Stony Brook, the offense better be ready to pick up the slack. The Seawolves have a great ground game with Miguel Maysonet and former Iowa Hawkeye Marcus Coker. In the regular season those two combined for over 2,500 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns. Against Villanova last week, Maysonet rushed for 160 yards and Coker added 107. Those are some big numbers. Because Stony Brook can control the clock and keep the ball away from the Bobcats offense, this could be a surprisingly close game.
