We warned you yesterday about Western Kentucky and they won four games in four days to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. It was also a good day to be in South Dakota. After the women’s team clinched another spot in the big dance by beating UMKC in overtime (go to the women’s basketball page for more on that), the men went to overtime themselves and knocked off a scrappy Western Illinois squad. Detroit also punched their ticket on Tuesday night. The good news for bubble teams was the loss by Penn. That made Harvard get the Ivy League’s automatic bid, otherwise there would have been a playoff to determine the Ivy’s representative in the NCAA Tournament. A win there by Penn would have likely made the Ivy a two-bid league. Never thought you’d hear that, but it didn’t happen and it might come up again in a few decades.
