Overview:

Whitney Mercilus had an outstanding junior season. He led in the nation in sacks, collecting 16, as well as in forced fumbles, tallying nine. He was a Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalist, as well as Benarik, Lombarid and Hendricks Award semifinalist. He was the key to the Fighting Illini defense. Playing in the Big Ten, he was going up against top tier offensive linemen on a weekly basis. He is a playmaker on defense and has an everlasting motor. His relentless play is how he wears down linemen and takes advantage of them.

Final Projection:

Mercilus is an outstanding defensive prospect. In a pass happy NFL there has been a premium placed on guys who can apply pressure on the quarterback. This happens to be Mercilus’ greatest asset, which helps his draft stock immensely. Furthermore he is a playmaker, which is the other key to the new age of NFL defenses. He will be a top 20 pick come draft day.
