FCFI Semifinals Preview

The Fantasy College Football Invitational has been knocked down to four teams and, believe it or not, College Sports Madness is among them. We sent theCFFsite home thinking about next year with a 164.15 to 133.75 victory. College Football Geek downed U-Sports without much trouble in one of the other quarterfinal matchups. They will face Athlon in the semifinals after they beat College Football News in what must go down in history as the most epic loss in fantasy football history.  College Football News lost 135.15 to 135.10. That is .05 points, the smallest point total possible, separating those two teams. But it is not just the close score that is so painful. All CFN needed was 1.25 points from Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz in the last game of the day. That sounded like a win. But Moniz threw for 23 yards, which is 1.15 points, before going down with an injury. If he had thrown for 25 yards, Athlon would have lost. That’s too funny. Anyway, top seeded RotoWire dominated Examiner and that is who we must face in the semifinals. If we can beat RotoWire, we can beat anybody.

RotoWire beat College Sports Madness back in week six by a score of 193.30 to 116.30. That was our worst performance of the season and now we want revenge. However, they have a very good team. Quarterbacks Cody Fajardo of Nevada and Kriss Proctor of Navy, not to mention Alex Carder of Western Michigan who is sitting on the bench at the moment, have been very good lately. Utah State’s Robert Turbin and Toledo’s Adonis Thomas have put up huge numbers at the running back spot. Wide receivers Justin Blackmon, Nick Harwell and Gerell Robinson make our receivers look like junk.

But we trust Case Keenum and hope SMU can stop the run game…unlike Tulane last week. Russell Wilson should have a nice game against a bad Illinois defense that is getting worse by the day. The only concern there is that the Badgers will not need to pass too much. Washington’s Chris Polk is due for a big game after getting shut down last week. Rex Burkhead has been a very consistent running back, but we will need more than consistency against Michigan this week. Our other running back spot is up for grabs. Cierre Wood is coming off of a nice game against a bad Maryland team. However, we may look to the SEC since four teams in that conference play teams from the Southern Conference this week. It may not be a good idea to pick up a backup running back in the SEC in the hopes that they will get a lot of carries in a blowout, but Wood is pretty much a backup at Notre Dame and Boston College would probably lose to Georgia Southern, so it’s pretty much the same thing.

At wide receiver we have to stick with Jeremy Ebert after his great game last week. Northwestern should be able to score a ton against Minnesota and the Northwestern defense is bad enough to allow the Gophers to stay in that game. Jermaine Kearse is our best #2 receiver, which is not a good thing. Hopefully Washington will get back on track against Oregon State since we will be playing Polk and Kearse again this week.

At tight end Cooper Helfet has been average at best, but there are not many other options. I never like playing anybody against an option team like Georgia Tech since the number of snaps goes down, but I’m pretty sure Helfet will get another touchdown this week if we bench him and hit the waiver wire. The kicker spot is a toss-up between Houston’s Matt Hogan and Clemson’s Chandler Catanzaro. Both have been good to us, but we should probably stick with Hogan. The Temple defense plays Army this week, so that looks like a good play.

Apparently, once again, we are sticking with our team and not hitting waivers. Our bench is pretty awful and full of risky players that never panned. The time for waiting for risky players to emerge as good fantasy players has long since passed. But for now, go Case Keenum! Check back next week to see how bad we lost…
