2023 Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament East Regional Overview

East Regional Overview

The East Regional is chock-full of teams who have the talent, grit, and chemistry needed to cut down the nets at Madison Square Garden on March 25 and reach the 2023 Final Four in Houston, Texas. Purdue, Marquette, and Kansas State will all look to cap off their dominant regular seasons with a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, lower-seeded teams like Duke, Kentucky, and Memphis have all shown flashes of greatness throughout the year and will look to make some noise in this year’s Big Dance.

Who Can Win?
The obvious answer is the region’s top-seeded Purdue Boilermakers. Although they struggled a bit down the stretch, Purdue deserves a ton of credit for being the regular season and tournament champions of the Big Ten, the deepest league in college basketball. They seem to have what it takes to make their first Final Four appearance since 1980. Another likely option is Shaka Smart’s Marquette Golden Eagles, who have already matched the program’s greatest number of wins in a single season (28) and seem to be playing their best at just the right time.

Who Can Surprise?
After reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 2021 as a 15 seed, Oral Roberts will look to put together another incredible run in March Madness this year. The Golden Eagles are 30-4 on the season and have won 17 games in a row. They also have a top-tier offense and are top 25 in the country in offensive efficiency, points per game, field goal percentage, and turnover margin. Led by Max Abmas, a senior guard and the nation’s third-leading scorer, Oral Roberts appears to be one of the most dangerous double-digit seeds in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Who’s Hot?
Marquette enters the 2023 NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak and just won their first Big East Tournament Championship in program history. The Golden Eagles have one of the best offenses in college basketball and are in an excellent position to make their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2013 or quite possibly their first Final Four since 2003. There’s also the Duke Blue Devils, who just claimed their 13th ACC Tournament title since 1999. They will ride a nine-game winning streak into the 2023 NCAA Tournament. After a slow start to the season, Duke has hit their stride and looks capable of competing with any team in the country.

Who’s Cold?
Since their victory against Texas on January 28, Tennessee has lost seven of their last 12 games. They also have just one win away from home since January 21. Even though most of their losses were to quality opponents, the Volunteers’ recent struggles do not bode well for their Final Four aspirations. In addition, Kansas State struggled a bit down the stretch, losing six of their final 11 games and suffering a double-digit loss to TCU in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. That said, like all Big 12 schools, the Wildcats have played an incredibly difficult schedule and have already shown that they can compete with just about any team in the country. First-year Head Coach Jerome Tang will now look to turn things around and help his team reach their first Final Four since 1964.

Upset Alert!
Given their recent performances and struggles winning away from home, the Tennessee Volunteers will need to be careful in their matchup against Louisiana. The Vols’ defense has not been quite as dominant as it was early in the season, and their offense has seemed to struggle against higher-quality opponents lately. To make matters worse, their starting point guard Zakai Zeigler tore his ACL in late February and will be unable to compete in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Louisiana ranks among the top 25 in college basketball in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and rebounding margin. The Ragin’ Cajuns have also won 16 of their last 19 games and will be highly motivated to earn their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1992.

What Possible Matchup is Interesting?
A Purdue-Marquette matchup with a trip to the Final Four on the line would certainly be exciting to watch. Both teams won their conference regular season and tournament titles, and they each boast one of the top offenses in all of college basketball. However, Marquette plays at a much faster pace than Purdue, and they rank second in the nation in fastbreak points. Shaka Smart and the Golden Eagles would look to speed up the game and dominate in points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Zach Edey and the Boilermakers have controlled the glass all year long and would hope to do the same against one of the Big East’s worst rebounding teams.

Which Player Will Dominate?
7-foot-4 Purdue center Zach Edey has been arguably the best player in all of college basketball this season. He’s averaging a 20-point double-double on the year and bullies opponents on both sides of the ball. Kansas State senior Keyontae Johnson has also been fantastic all year for the Wildcats. He’s a great playmaker, rebounder, and three-point shooter. No matter who his team is matched up against, Johnson is always one of the best athletes on the floor. Another player worth mentioning is Duke center and projected first-round pick Kyle Filipowski, who has been one of the most dominant big men in the ACC this season. The Blue Devils have benefited immensely from his ability to score in the paint, get his teammates involved, stretch the floor, and control the glass.

Which System is Tough to Prepare For?
Purdue has been one of the toughest teams to prepare for in college basketball this year. The size, length, and physicality of the Boilermakers’ frontcourt have overwhelmed opponents all season long. 7-foot-4, 305-pound Zach Edey is guaranteed to be a mismatch for any team Purdue faces in the East Regional. Furthermore, lower-seed teams like Kentucky and Memphis possess top-tier talent and could end up being very difficult matchups for the higher seeds in the region.
