Betting on the College Football Favorites of 2019

The 2019 college football season officially begins at the end of August, so it’s time to start picking some favorites. Everyone is scrambling to provide preseason rankings, and we have some of our own. Clearly, Alabama and Clemson continue to be seen as the favorites, but some other teams are chomping at the bit for a chance of a championship. We have two top contenders to challenge them this year.

Here are the top four teams we predict for this season.

Georgia

It’s fair to say that everyone was disappointed with the Bulldogs when they blew that lead during the SEC title game with Alabama. Adding insult to injury, they lost the Sugar Bowl to Texas. Still, we believe this team plans to course-correct.

If QB Jake Fromm challenges for the Heisman, he will have a lot of help. With RB D’Andre Swift in the backfield, the combination is downright deadly. The only thing the team lacks is a strong defense, but they have enough skill to come out on top. If only they can beat ‘Bama.

Ohio State

The team lost WR Parris Campbell, RB Mike Weber, QB Dwayne Haskins, and Urban Meyer, but the show isn’t over. There’s a new head coach in town, Ryan Day, and he plans to lead this team to victory. The Buckeyes also have a new QB, Justin Fields who comes from UGA.

The players to keep an eye on this season include J.K. Dobbins and DE Chase Young. Both of them are set to be star players.

Alabama

Since the 2013-14 season, Nick Saban hasn’t had two consecutive years without a national title. Anytime fans begin to question the ending of the Tide dynasty, Alabama jumps back on top. The trouble with this year is that Saban and his team face a lot of competition.

Still, with the current lineup of players, we have complete faith there will be a Bama-Clemson title game on the horizon. QB Tau Tagovailoa, LB Dylan Moses and WR Jerry Jones plan to do everything in their power to stop the Tigers.

Clemson

Obviously, the Clemson Tigers are a huge favorite. Not only will they lead the ACC, but the national title is in their reach if they can beat Alabama. It’s even possible that QB Trevor Lawrence could become the Heisman frontrunner.

There’s nothing about their upcoming schedule that should cause alarm, and no reason they can’t go 12-0.

Betting on College Football Games

When comparing college football betting to the NFL, you see several differences. Most importantly, countless teams play at once, which increases the options available. On the weekends, an enthusiastic fan can partake in games happening in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

With college football wagering, point spreads get used to bridge any gaps between teams. Sometimes, it’s for the home-field advantage and other times merely a program discrepancy.

Several betting options exist for college football lines.

Point Spread

Spreads aren’t just for bagels. They’re also a popular way to win on your favorite sports team. The favorite gets listed being minus the point spread. The underdog is the team that’s not expected to win.

A bettor wins when the team wins outright or loses by a number lower than the point spread.

Moneyline

Sometimes a game is too close of a matchup to make betting on the point spread worthwhile. In instances like a matchup between Auburn and Alabama, bettors opt for the moneyline instead.

Moneyline simply means betting on one team to be the winner. Instead of focusing on how much someone wins by, as in the point spread, moneyline betting is only about winning.

So, if Alabama were a -220 favorite over Auburn with +180, a $220 bet on the Crimson Tide would earn you another $100. Betting on the Tigers with $100 gets you an extra $180.

Totals

Another common term in college football betting is point totals. Sportsbooks set the number of total points they expect will be scored during a game. Then, bettors decide whether the actual point total will go over or under that total.

Final Thoughts

This year, New Orleans is set to host the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship on January 13, 2020, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. There’s no doubt that this season is going to be one to remember.
