Is DeShaun Watson Destined for the Top Pick in the 2017 NFL Draft?

Is DeShaun Watson destined for the top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft?

Without a shadow of a doubt, Clemson Tigers quarterback DeShaun Watson is one of the best quarterbacks in college football. In 2015, Watson was simply sublime as he became the first Tigers star to be named as a Heisman Trophy finalist – an incredible achievement to say the least.

However, he still has a lot to prove if he is to be selected with the first overall pick of next year’s NFL Draft.

In recent times, NFL franchises have started to place greater emphasis on defensive playmakers rather than quarterbacks; although most will make an exception for a player with Watson’s capabilities. In the modern era, a dual-threat quarterback is becoming the norm – and Watson has the skillset to improve further at the top level.

Last year, Watson threw for well over 4,000 yards, making 35 touchdown passes to just 13 interceptions as he led the Tigers to a 12-0 record for the first time in their illustrious history.

But it was his statistical work on the ground that will raise a few eyebrows amongst NFL coaches – he recorded 1,105 rushing yards at an average of 5.3 yards per carry, scoring 12 rushing touchdowns. Many have labelled him as the next Cam Newton and with that record, you can see why...

Ultimately, Watson’s future in the 2017 NFL Draft depends solely on who finishes with the worst record this year.

As of September 29th, there are plenty of teams in contention for the number one overall pick; although most will still be focused on trying to turn their fortunes around in a desperate bid to make the playoffs. However, Watson will keep working hard in preparation for next year’s draft.

For now, nobody knows where Watson will be playing next year but he will almost certainly be expected to slot in as a starter. The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers have lost their opening three fixtures and both franchises are in dire need of a quarterback.

In a way, Watson would fit Chip Kelly’s fast-paced, free-flowing offense and it wouldn’t be a major surprise to see the 49ers go after Watson; even if they have to trade up a few places...

However, the Clemson star will remain focused on the Tigers for now as they bid to win the NCAAF title. Throughout the campaign, college football odds like no other will appear on Betway’s website – and plenty of punters will also be interested in their draft markets.

Watson will just go about his business for the rest of the season; he knows that he is destined for a successful professional career. If he keeps doing things the right way and playing solid football, Roger Goodell might well be calling his name as the first overall pick in the next NFL Draft...
