Tour ORU

Oral Roberts Men's College Basketball Mabee Center

Tour ORU

Private, religious schools can have some neat things…like Touchdown Jesus for example. At Oral Roberts the ultra-modern architecture is like living in the not too distant future. Even the dorms look cool. At my public university the dorms looked like cheap, dirty apartments crammed into the middle of urban sprawl. Well, I guess that is what they actually were.

The problem with ORU’s cool look is the lack of anything neat about the basketball arena. The Mabee Center is just a normal looking basketball arena. There are no 30-ton bronze hands or a giant tower with an eternal flame. It doesn’t even look like a mini Epcot Center. The only neat thing about the Mabee Center is the little building next to it that looks the same and is known as the “Baby Mabee.” I think it is time for a new home for the Golden Eagle hoopsters. The Mabee Center has been around since 1972. And I expect something cool that fits with the rest of the campus. I can come up with a design if the price is right.

You can take your own little tour of Oral Roberts here. It’s all pretty neat (but I have it on mute), with the exception of the Hava Java. Is the school trying to tap into the youth by saying we are with it, we have Starbucks. It’s Starbucks. Is that supposed to make me want to go to ORU? You can walk five minutes in any direction and get to a Starbucks. I once lived across the street from a Starbucks that was literally across the street from another Starbucks. But anyway, Hava Java, whatever that’s supposed to mean, looks like the nice part of a community college…stick with looking at the architecture as you take a little trip through Oral Roberts.
