Boise State Hoops Prepare for MWC

The Boise State football program garners all the national attention. Now that they are moving to the Mountain West Conference, the program will face better competition and the Broncos and their blue turf will play bigger games and have bigger audiences. The basketball program will also benefit from the conference switch.

The television network alone makes every sport in the Mountain West a little more available to a national audience. That will be a good thing for the basketball program as they try to compete with conference powers like San Diego State and UNLV.

Coach Leon Rice is already reaping the benefit. His stellar recruiting class is among the best in the conference and that may continue for years to come. That may not make Boise State a consistent NCAA Tournament team any time soon, or ever, but they can emerge as a consistent contender for a conference title. The basketball tradition does not run deep at Boise State and it will never be able to compete with football, but the conference move will help Coach Rice and the basketball program. The exposure leads to better recruiting, the better competition leads to better preparation for the postseason and wins in the postseason lead to long term success. That is how programs are built and Boise State has already taken the first step.
