Kansas State Quarterback Questions

Heading into the spring, junior Collin Klein is the player to beat in the heated battle to replace Carson Coffman. Klein saw some action last season and even started a couple games. However, on the year he threw just 18 passes. He rushed 76 times. Obviously his passing game needs to improve, but if the spring was any indication, Klein is well on his way to turning into a quarterback who can actually throw. He capped off a fine spring with a great spring game. He ended up completing 25 of 37 passes for 358 yards and five touchdowns. While that may be a bad sign for the Wildcats defense, it is a good sign for the offense.

Senior Sammuel Lamur has emerged as the second quarterback…for now at least. He does not have much game experience, but he has been around for a while and has a stronger arm than Klein. Junior college transfer and former Eagle of Boston College, Justin Tuggle is in the mix as well. Tuggle’s lack of experience in the system is what is hurting him right now. He is a well-rounded quarterback who can be a physical runner and hang out in the pocket and make some nice passes. If he can learn the playbook in the fall, his experience at BC and Blinn Junior College, where he replaced Cam Newton, could make a big impact.

Incoming freshman Daniel Sams will try and add his name to the mix in the fall, although he may not have started out his career too well by saying that Klein was moving back to wide receiver. However, that may have been what he was told and not his fault at all. In any event, he has a big learning curve ahead of him and will likely spend this season on the sidelines unless everything goes very, very wrong for the Wildcats.

Klein had some good games last season and did give Kansas State the best chance to win games. It may not have always been pretty, but it worked. He should be the guy this year and we already know he can make things happen with his legs. If he can pass anywhere near as effective as he did in the spring during the fall, Kansas State has a winner.
