Last Four In: Tennessee-Martin, Youngstown State, Maine, Gardner-Webb
First Four Out: Chattanooga, New Hampshire, Cal Poly, Tennessee State
Is it possible the Patriot League and Big South could each send two teams to the FCS playoffs? It’s possible. Although it isn’t eligible for the automatic bid that goes with winning the Patriot League title, Fordham is eligible for an at-large berth as it ran its record to 5-0 with a victory over St. Francis (PA). Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb ran its record to 4-1 with an easy victory over Point, an NAIA entry. That’s not as significant, however, as all the losses that continue to mount for FCS schools in which Gardner-Webb is battling with for a playoff spot. Chattanooga, Stephen F. Austin, Richmond, Illinois State and Indiana State all lost. It’s early, but Gardner-Webb is definitely a player in the FCS playoff picture. As is the CAA’s Maine, which knocked off Richmond on Saturday. The Black Bears host Delaware, which got a big win over James Madison, in a game that also could have playoff implications.
