Alex Martinez MLS Draft Profile

Alex Martinez MLS Draft Profile

Alex Martinez, Senior, Midfielder, North Carolina State

Overview:

Martinez transferred to North Carolina State after two years at High Point. In his two seasons at High Point, Martinez played in 40 games and was named to the Big South All-Freshman team in 2010. He led the team in scoring in 2011 with 24 points (11G, 2A) and assisted on the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Virginia Commonwealth University.

As a junior in 2012, Martinez led the Wolfpack in several offensive categories, including goals (11), assists (10), points (32), shots (60), and game-winning goals (3). He played in all 20 games for the Wolfpack and earned All-ACC First Team honors. Martinez was also the first Wolfpack player since 1991 to register double-digit goals and double-digit assists in the same season.

Final Projection:

Martinez is the type of player who loves to challenge defenders. He is always looking to move forward and possesses the ability to handle the ball in tight spaces. Martinez’s lackluster work rate in the defensive end and his tendency to force play in the final third are both drawbacks, but his offensive prowess cannot be ignored. Whether it is during the run of play or on set pieces, Martinez can effectively distribute the ball and also deliver quality shots on goal. Professional teams looking for a high-end attacking midfielder or winger will likely take a chance on Martinez in the draft.
