Blake Smith MLS Draft Profile

Blake Smith MLS Draft Player Profile

Blake Smith, Senior, Forward/Midfield, New Mexico

Overview:

As an underclassman, Blake Smith did not make much of an impact at New Mexico. He only saw 272 minutes of action as a freshman in 2009. In 2010 he did start 11 games and appeared in 12, but none of his 24 shots found the back of the net. As a sophomore he tallied his first collegiate point on an assist against Seattle.

But Smith played a huge role in the Lobos magical 2011 campaign. He started all 22 games and led the Lobos with ten goals and added five assists. Smith proved to be an extremely efficient shooter. Back in 2010 .417 percent of his shots were on target…just none of them went in. Smith took 47 shots in 2011 with 24 of them on target.

Final Projection:

Smith’s efficiency around the goal and ability to create for his teammates should lead to another big season in 2012. Smith has good size at 5-10 and 150 pounds and can make things happen on the pitch. He is equally comfortable up front or back in the midfield and would be a great fit on the left wing for any team in need of depth at that position.
