The History of the Texas Longhorns

Texas is a sporting state. The Lone Star state is home to some of the biggest names in the sporting arena - the Texas Rangers, Houston Texans, San Antonio Spurs - hey, it even has horse racing tracks if you’re after a flutter on today’s racing, However, it is also home to the Big 12 Conference, 12 teams that compete in college sports across the state.

Here, we will look at The Texas Longhorns, the athletic teams that represent the University of Texas at Austin. They have an impressive history in college sports - from their iconic burnt orange uniforms to their passionate fan base, they have left an undeniable mark on the world of collegiate sports. So, let’s take a look at their history,  their achievements and their enduring legacy.

In The Beginning…

The University of Texas at Austin, UT Austin, was founded back in 1883 and it wasn’t long after that the athletics teams started to take shape. It was ten years later, in 1893, that the university fielded its first football team and a decade after that… in 1903 they officially adopted the Longhorn as their mascot.

The team was initially known as the Varsity and it was only later that they became the Long Horns, honouring the iconic Texas longhorn cattle.

Football Power House

Football has always been where the teams’ strengths lie. The team currently competes in the Big 12 Conference - and during this time has managed to build up quite a rivalry with the University of Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Showdown.

The Longhorns have certainly been successful during the years, having won four national championships - in 1963, 1969, 1970 and 2005 along with lots of conference titles. They have also boasted some legendary coaches in their time as well, including Darrell K Royal and Mack Brown. To this day, their program is a real force in college football.

Basketball Excellence

Although football has traditionally taken the spotlight, the Longhorns' basketball program has also had its moments. The men's team has made several appearances in the NCAA Tournament, with their greatest achievement being when they made a Final Four appearance in 2003.

The women's basketball team, however, has been nothing short of incredible. Under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Jody Conradt, the Lady Longhorns went on to win the NCAA Championship in 1986 and are consistently contenders in women's college basketball.

Olympic Legacy

Texas has also been a breeding ground for young Olympic talent. Under Coach Clyde Littlefield, the university's track and field program has produced many Olympic champions and world record holders. The Longhorns have stood out in lots of different Olympic sports - including swimming, diving and rowing.

A Baseball Tradition

The Longhorns' baseball program is also one of success. Led by legendary coach Augie Garrido, the team has won several national championships - in 1975, 1983, 2002 and 2005,  and they consistently rank among the top programs in the country. Their home stadium, Disch-Falk Field, is a famous venue for college baseball.

The University of Texas at Austin has a commitment to excellence in athletics and academics  - and this is clearly reflected in its achievements. It has produced lots of Hall of Fame athletes, including football legends Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams, along with basketball star Kevin Durant and the baseball great, Roger Clemens.

Challenges and Triumphs

Like any athletic program, the Longhorns have faced all different challenges throughout its history - including conference realignment and turbulent changes in coaching staff. However, throughout this, the resilience and determination of the Texas spirit have seen the program not just survive, but thrive.
