One year removed from a tough National Championship loss, Texas struggled mightily, winning only five games. This year Mack Brown and Texas are looking to rebound. Texas is looking to be a top 25 team all year, and compete for a Big 12 title.

Strengths:
Although the Longhorns were only able to scratch together five wins, their defense was outstanding. They ranked sixth nationally in total defense. This stingy defense did not allow many yards, but they did give up quite a bit of points despite the yardage total. They gave up 23.67 points per game, which was 49th in the nation.  Their passing defense was also 6th in the nation, but their running defense struggled, giving up over 138 yards per game, which was 44th in the nation. The Longhorns defense was their strength last season and look for it to be again this year. The good defense kept them in just about every game that they played. They will have to repeat that success this year, but this year they need their scoring defense to equate that of the yards allowed.  The offense struggled last year, but in their defense they were very young. This year the offense will have to be much better.

Weaknesses:
The Longhorns offense was awful last year. They ranked 66th in rushing offense, 50th in passing offense, and an abysmal 88th in scoring offense. That will not win you many football games playing in an elite conference.   They turned the ball over way to many times, having a negative one turnover ratio per game. That was 116th in the nation! The offense has now had a year to mature, and will certainly be better this year.

Bottom Line:
The Longhorns are a much improved team this season. Mack Brown looks to regain the reins on Texas, and return Texas back to prominence. Their defense was very good last year, and should return to form this year. Their offense struggled, but is getting several key starters back, included their running back and quarterback. That should go a long way in improving the Longhorn’s record.  Look for Texas to focus on taking care of the football and eliminating mistakes. The 2011 season hinges on how effective the offense can be this year.
