Last Eight In: Boston College, BYU, California, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Alabama, Long Beach State
First Eight Out: Maryland, Stanford, Charleston, Gonzaga, High Point, Notre Dame, Georgia, Duke
With last weekend’s games in the books, it has become very likely that either the ACC or SEC will get four national seeds. Texas Tech has put together a great resume this season, but outside of the Red Raiders, there isn’t another non-SEC or ACC team with a solid chance right now. UC Santa Barbara looked like a national seed a couple weeks ago, but after last week’s series loss to UC Davis, the Gauchos are not only out of national seed discussion, but on the wrong side of the regional host bubble as well. The best chances for sliding into a national seed are Southern Miss or Coastal Carolina. Both have top 20 RPI’s, but due to their conference strength, they will need to finish the season very strong to pass Mississippi State or South Carolina for the last spot.
Only minor changes to the field this week. Lamar, Cincinnati, and Maryland drop out after series losses, while Arizona State, Boston College and Nebraska enter with big series wins. Boston College is an interesting team. The Eagles are in a battle to make the ACC Tournament, but have series wins over NC State, Virginia, Louisville and now Wake Forest. Getting a win over Georgia Tech in their series in two weeks will be vital for their postseason chances.
