With conference play in full swing, the bubble is starting to shake itself out. Conference play has provided some teams a chance to hit reset and improve on poor starts, while it has been a nightmare for others, as their strong starts seem like distant memories. Wake Forest is a team that has taken full advantage of their opportunities. Last week, the Demon Deacons got a much needed weekend series win, as they knocked off Florida State. The Demon Deacons had lost two straight ACC series coming into the weekend, but now seem to be headed in the right direction. Up next is another home series, this time against North Carolina. Should Wake Forest pull off another series win over the Tar Heels, they could be in great shape for an NCAA Regional bid.
Connecticut is also surging as they sit just a half game out of first place in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies have won their last six games, including a sweep of Houston and a solid midweek win over a talented Bryant club. Connecticut was predicted to finish near the top of the conference in the preseason, but a slow start had that in question. Their solid play in recent weeks has the Huskies moving into this week’s projections as one of four new teams this week, the others being Minnesota, Cal State Fullerton and the Demon Deacons. Capitalizing on the momentum Connecticut has going now will be key, as there are a number of teams on the bubble looking to get into the field should one of these teams falter down the stretch.
