The second week of the college baseball season saw teams really get into the flow of things. The opening weekend was slowed by wintery weather and a lot of teams had to deviate from their scheduled games. The second weekend got teams back on track and there were some great matchups. The first midweek games of the year did not disappoint. USC, having not posted a winning record since 2005, upset Cal State Fullerton 6-1 and LSU went to Southeastern Louisiana and grinded out a hard fought victory in front of a sold out crowd. The weekend saw three different series matching up Top 25 teams.  East Carolina and top prospect Jeff Hoffman went up against Virginia and were swept. Brandon Downes started off the weekend for Virginia by homering off Hoffman twice and the Cavaliers didn’t look back from there. Miami had an in-state battle with Florida and showed that they are improved from last seasons disappointing campaign, winning the first two games of the series.  Oregon State was in action in the Pac-12/ Big Ten Challenge and defeated a ranked Indiana squad, but the Beavers lost their other two games to Nebraska and Michigan State. The losses by teams near the top saw some shuffling in this weeks’ bracket, and four new teams joined the field. Texas Tech, off to a 6-1 start, joined the field as a number two seed after series wins over Indiana and Oral Roberts. Three undefeated squads join them: USC, Tennessee and Houston.  This week will put a lot of top teams against each other. In the top 10, Oregon plays Cal State Fullerton, Florida State plays Miami, and South Carolina faces Clemson. Watch for those games, as well as the Houston Classic that brings together some of the best teams in the Lone Star state together.
