This Week in Big South Men's Basketball (2/4 - 2/8)

The VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships are rapidly approaching, and the conference standings are just as crowded as ever.  Fans of the conference remember Liberty’s magical run through the bracket at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina last season.  With the lack of a true breakaway team in the conference, we may see another such run this year.  We will begin to break down the conference in this space on a weekly basis, but we’ll start the festivities with a “shortened” look at Big South men’s hoops.

Game of the Week

VMI 108, Gardner-Webb 104 (4OT):  This selection should be completely obvious.  The Keydets drained a last-second shot at the end of regulation, then hit two more shots just before the buzzer to send the game to a third and fourth overtime, respectively.  The clubs combined to sport 11 players in double figures (Gardner-Webb 6, VMI 5) and five players scorching the nets for greater than 20 points.  VMI and Gardner-Webb also hoisted 188 total shots in the affair, hitting 79 (42 percent), along with a 35-of-49 (71 percent) performance from the free throw line.  The Keydets maintained their first-place tie in the North Division with the victory.

Player of the Week

D.J. Covington, VMI:  Despite Jordan Downing’s tremendous performance (27 points) in Presbyterian’s first conference victory of the season, Covington truly paced the Keydets in their marathon triumph over Gardner-Webb.  Covington scored 28 points on a 13-of-16 performance from the floor.  He also notched a double-double, as he pulled down 13 rebounds.  The big man played a workmanlike 55 minutes in the contest, hitting the shot that sent the game to a third overtime, along with getting the assist on the shot that enabled a fourth extra period.
