Axel Sjoberg MLS Draft Profile

Axel Sjoberg MLS Draft Profile

Axel Sjoberg, Sophmore, Defender, Marquette

Overview:

Axel Sjoberg started in three matches in 2011 before being red-shirted due to a foot injury, but showed no signs of distressed last season starting in all 21 matches. Hailing from Sweden and standing at 6-foot-7, Sjoberg is the tallest player for the Golden Eagles and one of the tallest in the league, a real tower of power.

But his height and performance on the defensive side aren’t his only attributes. Axel played a huge part on the other side of the ball last season scoring multiple game winners including a header against Michigan State and both goals for MU for the comeback win over Michigan last season, which earned him player of the week by Soccer America and topdrawersoccer.com. College Sports Madness dubbed him Big East offensive player of the week as a defender after he had a three goal weekend in 2012.

Final Projection:

Eight goals as a defender are impressive and show that Axel Sjoberg can play both sides, which is a key element to being picked up by the majors. That, combined with his size and skill, makes him an unstoppable force. After the injury in 2011 and a huge comeback in 2012, we are bound to see him grow this season and break out his full potential giving him an early pick in 2014.
