Women’s NCAA Tournament Bridgeport Sweet 16 Game Breakdowns

No. 6 Delaware vs. No. 2 Kentucky

The true Cinderella story continues on in Bridgeport as underdog Delaware faces highly touted and fast breaking Kentucky. Elena Delle Donne and her Blue Hen teammates may end up facing UConn Monday in the game which everyone had hoped for when the brackets were announced on Selection Monday. Delaware must first get by a very good Kentucky team which beat Dayton 84-70, largely on the strength of a 16-3 run. A'dia Mathies had a career high 34 points on 13-17 shooting from the field. Delaware beat UNC as Delle Donne scored 33 points in her last home game. The Blue Hens are far from a one trick pony as they have seven senior contributors. Trumae Lucas had 20 and Danielle Parker 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win. Delaware will bring a big contingent to the sold out Arena at Harbor Yards.

Pick: DELAWARE

No. 1 Connecticut vs. No. 4 Maryland

This is a rematch of a December game in which UConn won 63-48 in Hartford. To get to Bridgeport, UConn throttled Vanderbilt 77-44 in a game which was not even that close. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led her team with 22 points and freshman Breanna Stewart re-emerged from a slump with 14 points. UConn has as many as seven WNBA players on its team. The game was played before a disappointing crowd of 4,483 at Gampel Pavilion.  UConn won for the 22nd straight time over an ACC opponent. Maryland beat Michigan State 74-49 from the vastly overrated Big Ten. Alyssa Thomas continued her hot streak with 28 points and Maryland continued to hold opponents under 50 points, playing tough defense.  UConn is now 31-4 and Maryland stands at 26-7.

Pick: UCONN
