Women's NCAA Tournament Bridgeport Regional Overview

Women's NCAA Tournament Bridgeport Regional Overview

This region is headed by UConn, playing all of its game in Connecticut, also the site of the Big East Tournament. North Carolina or Kentucky may push UConn but it will be another trip to the Final Four for the Huskies.

#1 Connecticut, #2 Kentucky, #3 North Carolina, #4 Maryland, #5 Michigan State, #6 Delaware, #7 Dayton, #8 Vanderbilt, #9 St. Joseph's, #10 St. John's, #11 West Virginia, #12 Marist, #13 Quinnipiac, #14 Albany, #15 Navy, #16 Idaho

Who Can Win?

Sorry, but only UConn can win this region. They have seven potential WNBA players led by Stefanie Dolson and Kalena Mosqueda-Lewis. Geno Auriemma is the best coach in the game, and despite his problems with Baylor and Notre Dame this season, there is no such team in this region.

Who Can Surprise?

Delaware, Dayton and Marist all can surprise. They are well coached and Delaware has the best player in the region in Elena Delle Donne and Delaware is also potentially playing two games at home.

Who's Hot?

Marist. They have won 21 games in a row and have had great success in the NCAA's under Brian Giorgis. They can win a couple of games in the tournament.

Who's Cold?

West Virginia. They have lost three in a row; however, they are tough as all Mike Carey teams are. They had some difficulty in adjusting to a new conference in the Big 12. They also had a bad home loss out of conference to Duquesne.

Upset Alert!

Marist over Michigan State. Again, Giorgis can coach. His teams play tough defense and defense wins NCAA games. Elizabeth Beynnon is one of the best players in this region. Michigan State had a bad loss in its last game against Purdue in the Conference Tournament.

What Possible Matchup Is Interesting?

Vanderbilt-St. Joe's. About three weeks ago, St. Joe's was not even in the tournament. They came on and had a big upset over Dayton in the conference tournament. Vanderbilt played a tougher schedule and is more talented. This should come down to the wire with Vanderbilt winning.

Which Players Will Dominate?

Delle Donne, Dolson, Mosqueda-Lewis, Beynnon and Stallworth all can dominate.

Which System Is Tough To Prepare For?

When you have the top coach in the game in Auriemma, having the ability to add some Princeton offensive principles with Dolson at the top of the key with the ability to shoot or pass, is a recipe for disaster for opponents. They mix it up on defense and can fast break with the best of teams. It is UConn hands down.
