Utah made a huge statement to the rest of the nation this weekend as they picked up their first two wins in program history over Arizona in Salt Lake City. On Saturday, freshman Alyssa Barrerra clinched the series for the Utes in the bottom of the seventh inning with a game-winning single scoring Kelly Martinez. Pitching was another difference maker for the Utes as Miranda Viramontes and Kelly Donovan kept Arizona hitters in check all weekend long for the most part. Washington shook up the Pac-12 race a bit by going down to Eugene and taking two of three from hated rival Oregon, including a 5-3 win on Saturday to clinch that series. Morganne Flores’ three doubles were huge along with Ali Agular going 4-for-5 at the plate. Taran Alvelo made key pitches when she needed to in the circle to give Washington time to get back in the game and eventually win. Now the Huskies with their off week in Pac-12 play are just going to take a fun trip back to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama for two games in a key intersectional battle. Florida has reclaimed the top spot in the nation for the time being after knocking off Florida State 1-0 last Wednesday night in front of a record crowd of 2,547 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The pitching has been outstanding for the Gators as Kelly Barnhill and Delanie Gourley head up a pitching staff that can lock down anyone on any given day.
